Course overview

This course will deal with the biology and epidemiology of fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, protozoa, parasitic plants and other pathogens that are the main causes of plant disease.

This five day course is intended for agronomists, plant breeders and crop protection professionals who need to develop an in depth knowledge of the underlying biology and epidemiology of pathogens that are causal agents of plant diseases. Attendees will be enabled to develop and evaluate integrated control measures against these pathogens, improving productivity.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the Biology and Epidemiology of Plant Pathogens course participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate the epidemiology and biological nature of different pathogens and the implications and opportunities for control.
  • Evaluate the various stages in the life cycle of key pathogens and the implications and opportunities for control.
  • Evaluate different plant disease model methodology.
  • Critically review recent studies on epidemiology and host-pathogen interactions.
  • Analyse and critically appraise data generated from field experiments.

Assignment 1 is a case study of a single pathogen selected from a choice.

Assignment 2 is an analysis and critical appraisal of field experiment data. 

Both will be launched during the taught week’s delivery and the submission will be not less than five weeks later. The submission date will be set based upon workload scheduling across the course programme, so that there is sufficient time between launch and submission to meet the time guide requirements associated with the assessment components.
