This course is delivered over 4 days which are purposely spread out to allow participants to work on their communication skills and reflect on practice. The coursework is related to this which is why the course is not offered as 'CPD only'. Participants will be supported by the course convenor and tutors on the contact days and by email contact with the course convenor. The course is supported on Moodle and the coursework includes the use of video clips to be observed and critiqued. The course was originally designed for those working in healthcare but is relevant for anyone who has frequent one to one consultations and would benefit from developing active listening skills.

Course overview

This course develops knowledge of communication skills for one to one client consultations is an MSc level course which will examine the theoretical background and rationale for the use of good communication skills and will enable participants to develop the skills needed to communicate effectively with their clients.

It was initially developed for healthcare workers but will be adapted to any situation where one to one communication needs to be effective and lead to mutual understanding. It will encourage participants to reflect on their current practice and apply their learning to their work environment.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Observe, identify and evaluate the use of communication skills.
  • Critically appraise and synthesise research evidence.
  • Reflect on and identify ways to improve own practice within the professional environment.
  • Provide constructive and sensitive feedback to enhance peer learning.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills in client/practitioner scenarios.
  • Consider the patient/client perspective.
Additional Course Information

You will gain knowledge and understanding of:

  • The process of how communication skills lead to improved outcomes in client/practitioner relationship.
  • The evidence for the role of communication skills in facilitating an effective client/practitioner relationship.
  • The specific skills needed to facilitate the client/practitioner relationship.

The majority of courses will be assessed using work-based projects and possibly a theoretical piece of work. Assessment includes one 2000 word essay on the evidence base for communication skills and a structured reflective portfolio which includes a series of reflections observations and worksheets. The reflective portfolio also includes an assessment of the practical skills developed over the course.
