The European Union is a key, lucrative market for many countries around the world, and ensuring compliance with its requirements is a major issue for trade. The EU is also a leader in the establishment of effective food law and related control systems, with its legislation frequently being used as a basis for national and regional food laws.

The impact of food law affects each and every aspect of the agrifood industries which makes this topic relevant to anybody working in the Sector.

To assist you with your understanding of EU Food Law we have four separate Knowledge Nuggets looking at various aspects and insights of the topic:  

EUFL1 - Stages in Development of EU Food Law

This course is offered FREE OF CHARGE to any participant registering for one or more courses from the EU Food Law Knowledge Nuggets.

You will be provided with a history of  EU Food law through a short online video tutorials, plus associated core and support material. 

EUFL2 - Policies and Procedures

This Nugget will introduce you to  the basic principles of EU Food Law, defining the space in which it operates, the kind of regulations that govern it, and the ways that laws come into being and how they are implemented on a national basis by member states.

This Nugget will explore the way that current EU Food Law operates, including the interaction of EU and national bodies, official controls to ensure compliance (including audits), and hte development and use of the Food and Feed Safety Alert System

EUFL5 - EU Food Law - Key Components

This Nugget explores the primary structural elements of EU Food Law, including categories of regulation that are in operation, official demarcations of 'food' from other products, and an introduction to navigating legislation databases.

EUFL6 - Food Information and Labelling

This Nugget will provide a brief introduction to labelling from an EU perspective, including the rationale for including certain types of information, and exploring the requirements on some of the major labelling components.

EUFL7 - Chemicals:  Additives and Contaminants

This Nugget will explore the additives (substances intentionally added) and contaminants (substances unintentionally added or remaining), and identifying the regulations that guide and balance these substances in acceptable limits.

EUFL8 - Food Hygiene and HACCP

This Nugget will explore the background and development of food hygiene as a concept, and the operation of HACCP in particular.  It will explore this in relation to evolving EU legislation and ask how effective these approaches have been in improving standards.
