Course overview

The ability to stay current with international food law is going to be challenging for UK and International food manufacturers and producers.  Understanding the implications of Brexit and potential trading partnerships outside the EU will be a key requirement as AgriFood Industries move forward and forge new trading agreements. 

To assist you with your understanding of International Food Law we have four separate Knowledge Nuggets looking at various aspects and insights of the topic: 

IFL1 - Food Law in a Global Context

Food Law in a Global Context will introduce you to the concept of food law: what it covers, how it is managed on a regional and national level, their compliance controls, and the major international bodies that are engaged in international cooperation and harmonisation.

IFL2 - The Codex Alimentarius

The Codex Alimentarius is a collection of internationally recognized standards, codes of practice, guidelines, and other recommendations relating to foods, food production, and food safety.

It covers all foods, whether processed, semi-processed or raw. In addition to standards for specific foods, the Codex Alimentarius contains general standards covering matters such as food labelling, food hygiene, food additives and pesticide residues, and procedures for assessing the safety of foods derived from modern biotechnology. It also contains guidelines for the management of official i.e. governmental import and export inspection and certification systems for foods.

This Nugget will introduce you to one of the most important piece of international regulation – the Codex Alimentarius. It will explore its background, its current modes of operation, and its influence on global food law.

IFL3 - World Trade Organisation

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed by the bulk of the world’s trading nations and ratified in their parliaments. The goal is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible.

This Nugget will explore the work of the World Trade Organisation, outlining the structure of the organisation, its operations in a global context, its interactions with the Codex, and an introduction to using the information available on WTO databases.

IFL4 - World Trade Organisation Disputes

This Nugget will explore the role of the WTO by focusing on one particular example: a dispute involving beef hormones. This case study will introduce major elements of WTO regulations, the dispute process, and explore the ramifications for producers and consumers.
