Course overview

The UK has manyof it's own laws and regulations governing the production, transport, retail, and consumption of food.

Through a series of five Knowledge Nuggets beginning with the evolution of food laws in the UK throughout its history and providing context to modern developments you will explore the foundations of modern food legislation and their place within the overall structure of legal requirements placed on the food industry.   Learn also where to find and interpret laws relating to your profession and how to participate in (and contribute to) the development of future laws relating to the development of future UK food law.

UKFL1 - UK Food Law History & Current Elements

This Nugget will provide you the background to the current UK food regulation legislation by exploring the historical development of these elements over time. This includes the foundational modern legislation and the impact of the UK’s status as an EU member state towards creating the current framework.

IFL2 - The Codex Alimentarius

The Codex Alimentarius is a collection of internationally recognized standards, codes of practice, guidelines, and other recommendations relating to foods, food production, and food safety.

It covers all foods, whether processed, semi-processed or raw. In addition to standards for specific foods, the Codex Alimentarius contains general standards covering matters such as food labelling, food hygiene, food additives and pesticide residues, and procedures for assessing the safety of foods derived from modern biotechnology. It also contains guidelines for the management of official i.e. governmental import and export inspection and certification systems for foods.

This Nugget will introduce you to one of the most important piece of international regulation – the Codex Alimentarius. It will explore its background, its current modes of operation, and its influence on global food law.

IFL3 - World Trade Organisation

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed by the bulk of the world’s trading nations and ratified in their parliaments. The goal is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible.

This Nugget will explore the work of the World Trade Organisation, outlining the structure of the organisation, its operations in a global context, its interactions with the Codex, and an introduction to using the information available on WTO databases.

IFL4 - World Trade Organisation Disputes

This Nugget will explore the role of the WTO by focusing on one particular example: a dispute involving beef hormones. This case study will introduce major elements of WTO regulations, the dispute process, and explore the ramifications for producers and consumers.
