Course overview

This short course, suitable for graduates and non-graduates working in the Crops Industry, has been produced in order to develop an appreciation of factors that influence occurrence of pest and disease outbreaks, and to enable you to recognise, evaluate and design appropriate strategies for control.

This short course will develop your awareness of the significance of crop protection problems and provide you with an understanding of the principles of conventional and novel approaches to control.

This course is a pre-requisite for the Plant Health Management Practices module.



Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course the participants will be able to:

  • Diagnose plant pest and disease problems and evaluate their economic and biological significance
  • Relate the biology, epidemiology and population dynamics of key example weed, pest and disease problems to the occurrence and severity of, and control strategy for, their outbreaks
  • Evaluate the sustainability of example integrated pest management systems
  • Evaluate the mode of action of pesticides and how to predict and minimise control problems arising from their use ( for instance resistance, resurgence)
  • Assess the current and potential future use of technology such as molecular diagnostics, genetic modification and GIS / GPS in crop production
