Course Logistics
Our distance learning modules are designed to be flexible and most of our participants work full time at the same time as studying for 10 to 15 per week, for each 20 credit module. Blocks of modules are delivered with start dates in January, May and September, with most modules offered once each year. This module is delivered entirely online by distance learning.

Course overview

The Global Ruminant Production course focuses on how to increase the efficiency of both intensive and extensive ruminant production systems. It draws upon research within IBERS to cover topics such as the basics of performance measuring and the latest research on ruminant genetics. Using this research, participants will be enabled to reduce the environmental impact of global ruminant production.

You will explore the fundamental genetics and physiology that underpin animal production in terms of: reproductive technology; genetic improvement; dairy cattle production systems; meat production systems; meat and milk quality; disease prevention and management.

This course is an optional module in the MSc Sustainable and Efficient Food Production  MRes Agriculture and the MSc in Food Security in a Changing Environment.

The module is delivered by Aberystwyth University, entirely online through distance learning.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module participants should be able to:

  • Evaluate the components of ruminant production systems.
  • Review and evaluate scientific literature and apply results to the development of ruminant production systems
  • Explain how science can be applied to the improvement of ruminant production.
  • Discuss ethical and social issues related to the application of animal sciences.
